Coach Leake said she is very pleased with the play of all team members, and expects to finish as one of the top two teams in the district.

Meanwhile the boys’ baseball team is one and one with a loss to Clarke County and a win over George Mason.

They lost to Clarke County by a score of 8 to 5, but coach Mike Tupper was not discouraged. He noted that it was the first game of the season for his team, while Clarke County had played an earlier game. “The kids played hard,” he said.

He noted that his team had made three errors and “one was costly. We left 11 men on base. We had the opportunity to win but didn’t take charge,” he added.

He too was glad that the season had finally started and noted that his team had not been able to practice outside as often as the girls because the baseball field drains more poorly than the softball field. “After a while there is no more you can do inside,” he said.

Richard Lillard had a double, and Jason Brown, Hunter Foster, Paul Brown, Luke Zindel and Barry Tummeyer had singles. J.C. Welch pitched four innings and Hunter Foster pitched two. Coach Tupper was pleased with the pitching which he said is “the key to success.”

“I see a lot of improvement,” Coach Tupper said. “We will be ready for the second half of the season.”

In the Monday game against George Mason, which the boys won 8 to 5, Coach Tupper said the team started rough on both offense and defense. J.C. Welch again started and struck out five, but two of those batters got on base with dropped balls. “He threw well but didn’t get defensive support,” Coach Tupper said.

Leroy North relieved Welch in the third inning, and struck out eight. “He did a super job," Coach Tupper said. Paul Brown hit a tworun homer. In the top of the seventh inning Brown got another hit driving in two more runs. Richard Lillard also drove in two runs with a single and double. Luke Zindel got the team’s fifth hit.
