Robin Purnell is clearly indebted to the time recently spent living in St. Petersburg, Russia. But her work now on view at the Middle Street Gallery springs equally from her mastery of technique. Superior skills are evident, whether she is using paint, pastels, or colored pencil. Especially brilliant is her use of alkyd (oil base paint) or egg tempera on masontie. These pictures glow7 with exquisite detail and a sombre light. Her colors are carefully chosen.
I’m told that Russians never smile in public. They consider it unseemly. Today’s Russian clothes are still much like costumes from the past. Children are still innocent in ways our media hip kids are not. St. Petersburg is a city of crumbling grandure caught in a vise of change on top of neglect. All these aspects
