The board also learned that the average daily membership through March was 1,018 students. State aid to localities is based in part on ADM. The current budget was based on an ADM of 1,010. The eight additional students will mean some increase in state aid, but Dr. Gangel said he did not yet know how much.
The budget proposed for next year is based on an ADM of 1,040, or an increase of 22 students over the actual average membership so far this year. Membership this year was highest in September and October and has been dropping since November.
That has generally been true, but for the past two years enrollment increased through December, Dr. Gangel told the board. This year the drop in membership has been faster than in previous years. Membership at the end of March was 997.
Dr. Gangel gave the board a list of $89,350 in unanticipated expenditures so far this year. Some of this shortfall will come out of savings in teachers’ salaries. Some can come from savings in fuel usage, and some can come from additional state aid,' but Dr. Gangel said he does not yet know if he can handle all expenses without asking the Board of Supervisors for an additional appropriation.
