the trip had been cut short because of the predicted snowstorm. The students returned home at 4 p.m. Friday March 12 instead of 8 p.m. Mr. Neufeld said this actually made the trip better since they returned home less exhausted than in other years.
He said he would recommend that in future years they eliminate the visit to the fine arts museum and St. John’s Chruch in Richmond and one dinner, and that the trip be moved from the second week in March to the third week in April. The increased ticket prices for later in the season would almost entirely be balanced by eliminating some of the events on the last day, he said.
The board received the special education plan and tabled it for action at the May meeting. Margarita Piper, director of pupil personnel, said that the plan included mainly changes mandated by the federal government that require meetings and plans to prepare students in special education for the transition from school to the world of work and independent living.
She said there were also mandated changes in terminology. Instead of “mentally retarded students” there are now “students with mental retardation” and similar changes for other categories of special education.
Assistant superintendent Robert Chappell reported that because of repeated problems with leaks in the elementary school roof, the manufacturer, Owens Coming, is planning to have a contractor put a twoply cover over the roof. Mr. Chappell said he is waiting for written confirmation of this proposal.
The board voted to accept Dr. Gangel’s recommendation that one of the three days missed for snow be made up by having school on Memorial Day and that two additional days not be made up but be compensated
