The landfill operator is paid to operate two machines 20 hours each a week; since 18 tons a day is not much, the reality is they seldon Work over five hours a week. I am jure the contractor is very happy at our expense.
The only thing citizens without children in the school system get for their taxes is the privilege of driving three miles to dispose of our trash, versus 15 miles to the landfill.
Closing remote sites certainly serves us badly. I would suggest thait opening more would be more appropiate. Not these rat-infested blights we now have, but small, attended compactors, fenced for safety and illegal dumping, places that could be manned by part-time people such as community service servers, prisoners of our local jail, or by a contractor.
Our landfill is a great asset. If opening a new cell to present standards is expensive, then five-year bonds should be sold while interest rates are at a 25-year low. The cost of the new cell should not be paid in one year.
We would end up paying much less than the proposal of hauling to Fauquier. Let’s not find a shortterm solution to a long-term problem.
