their opponents as much as Rappahannock teams, track and field coach David van de Graff said that is not true for the track team. The other teams in the district have hard surfaced tracks which dry off quicker, he said, and they have been able to practice more. The team has been able to use the finished, but not yet open section of four-lane road for practice, particularly for hurdles.
The team came in third in a three-way meet with Strasburg and Brentsville at Brentsville last week, but several runners had success. In the boys two-mile race Jason Waters came in first and Mike Grimsley second. Mark Jenkins was second in the one-mile race, and Randy Early ran second in the 400 meter race.
Both boys and girls ran second in the 400-meter relay races, with Terra Hudsonpillar, Amber Early, Patty Atkins and Shannon Eastham running for the girls and Mike Gilkey, John Mallory, Jason Settle and Willie Shanks running for the boys.
Coach van de Graff is pleased that 34 students came out for the team, but noted that seven are eighth graders who can practice and run with the team but cannot score.
He is pleased also with his team’s appearance. The booster club purchased new uniforms for the track team and the players themselves purchased matching sweat suits. “They really look like a team,” he said.
The track team also has a meet not included in the schedule published last week. On April 26 they will have a three-way meet with Orange and Madison, at Madison.
