Eaton’s testimony was confusing and contradictory at times. She testified that she was in Tennessee looking for employment on June 17, the original date for sentencing. She said that because the truck she was driving had broken down “halfway between Connecticut and jail,” she was unable to call the court.
During crosstexamination by special prosecutor John Bennett, Eaton revealed that she failed to notify the court of her wherabouts at any time between June 17 and her arrest July 4, even though she appeared in court in Culpeper for a traffic violation sometime during that period.
Bennett also pointed out that one of the conditions of her release bond was that she not leave the state of Virginia. Eaton said that she was a truck driver, and had to travel.
