If you have not worked long enough under Social Security to qualify for Social Security Benefits, you may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability payments. SSI, also adminstered by Social Security, is paid to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, or blind, or age 65 or older. You should file for Social Security or SSI beneifts as soon as you become disabled.
The maximum benefit payable today to a person with a disability is $1,324. A family of three of more (the disabled worker, spouse, and child) can receive as much as $1,986. That may not be enough to live on, but at least it’s a base on which to build using private insurance and other means. You can find out exactly how much your Social Security disability would be by calling Social Security’s toll-free number, 1-800772-1213, or by contacting your Social Security office and asking for an application for a “personal earning and benefit estimate statement.”
The important thing to remember is that Social Security is there for you not just at 65, but throughout your life. Social Security-it’s more than retirement.
