construction had taken 17 year*. After his death, all work stopped, leaving a part of the interior incomplete. In the years from 1884 to 1886, Ludwig lived in the rooms on and off for a total of perhaps six months. Neuschwanstein was his most ambitious project, set in its isolated location atop a rock ledge high above tbe Poll at Gorge. The ledge served as the foundation of the castle, and because of the unusual configuration, supported portions of the third floor as well as the floor at the lop of the main staircase of Untersberg marble. This hall, with its colorfully painted Romanesque vaults, is trapezoidal in shape, and its walls are decorated with scenes from the primitive version of the Siegfried saga. The doorway off the left side of the vestibule leads to the king’s apartments. The study, like most of the rooms, is decorated with wall paintings showing scenes from the Nordic legends, the very ones that inspired Wagner's operas. The theme of the study is the Tannhauser saga
