Street Names Coming
Street names and numbers are coming to Rappahannock County. When the E-911 (Emergency nine-one-one) system is complete, every road in the county will have an official name, and every house and establishment will have a number.
The route and box number system presently used by the post office will disappear, and everybody will have an address that actually indicates where they live.
Tied in with the house numbers will be a county-wide emergency 911 number and dispatch system. Emergency numbers today vary depending on location. Many are regular 7-digit phone numbers with different numbers for fire and police or sheriff. In addition, street signs will be erected at most intersections, and households will post street numbers.
The new system will benefit just about everybody. It will be particularly valuable in an area like ours where many of the roads resemble twisty little mazes.
Here are some of the positive spinoffs:
• Increased public safety. This is the stated purpose of the E-911 system. There w ill be one emergency number, 911, for the entire county to replace the present conflicting system. You wron’t have to remember tw o or more 7-digit emergency numbers. As soon as children can w alk and talk they can be taught to remember and dial 911. The rescue squad or fire department can come directly to your door, instead of looking for “the third house after the second bridge,” for example.
• Better mail and delivery service. The post office and delivery services, such as United Parcel Service, will have an easier time bringing things to your door. Even if the post office changes the rural route or box number, as they have done in many areas of the country, your address will not change.
