Landfill Not Ready

The agreement to haul Rappahannock’s trash to Fauquier County for disposal is coming unraveled.
At last Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Board of Supervisors County Administrator John McCarthy said Fauquier County would not be able to take Rappahannock trash by early October. In fact, he said, it would probably be the middle of next summer before the new cell at the Fauquier landfill would be ready.
Unless the county can get some extension from the EPA, Rappahannock will have to monitor the current landfill for 30 years if trash is put there after October 9. If the cell could be closed by October 9, the county would only have to monitor the site for 10 years. Part of the savings to the county for taking trash to Fauquier was supposed to be the lower monitoring costs.
Additionally the contract with Updike Industries to handle the dumpster sites at Huntly and Scrabble and operate the landfill expires October 1. The supervisors had hoped to have a new centralized site to replace Huntly and Scrabble and to cease operations at the landfill by that date. Then the county could advertise for a new contract to haul from the new site and the landfill to Fauquier.
