The DEA said khat contains an alkaloid cathinone that stimulates the nervous system, causing temporary exhilaration, talkativeness, hyperactivity, wakefulness and loss of appetite. In excess, khat consumption produces symptoms similar to alcohol intoxication, with effects lasting up to 24 hours.
“Chronic idleness has been cited as one of the major social problems associated with khat use,” according to the DEA.
News reports from Somalia blamed khat for fighting and other violence occurring in the evening after residents had been chewing the drug for several hours.
The DEA reported that the U.S. Customs Service seized more than 1,600 pounds of khat in the United States between August 1991 and October 1992, with seizures reported in Champlain, N.Y.; Chicago; Dallas; Newark, N.J.; New York City; and St. Louis. Khat sells for as much as $300 a kilogram (2.2 lbs.) in this country, Gaither said.
The federal government on Feb. 18 put khat on its list of controlled substances.
