One of the moil interesting slops on the "Romantic Europe" tour will be our visit, to the magnificent castle of Neuschwanstein. A fairytale of architecture built on a flight of fancy of Mad King Ludwig II. In 1863, after a visit to the great castle of Warburg, the king wrote to his good friend, Richard Wagner: “...I have the intention to rebuild the ancient castle ruins of llohenschwangau ...in the true style of the ancient German knight’s castle...” The following year, construction began on the first of a series of fantastic castles, a series which stopped only with Ludwig’s untimely death in 1886, just five days after he was deposed because of alleged insanity. Neuschwanstein was the greatest castle of Ludwig II. Until the king’s death.
