The School Board agreed Tuesday night that the administrative position held by Richard Smith needs to become permanent if funds are available.
Mr. Smith switched from teaching to administration this year. At first his position was supposed to be part time as an administrator and part time as a teacher. The parttime administrative position was created to free up time for Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell to serve as “clerk of the works” for the construction involved in the elementary school addition.
Because of problems that became apparent when a roofing repair project at. the elementary school last spring caused fumes that resulted in the school being evacuated and several children being transported to local hospital emergency rooms, Mr. Smith was also assigned responsibility for developing policies to deal with various environmental, health and safety issues. Developing and implementing those policies has become almost full-time work for him.
