“I work in the classroom and work directly with the teachers’ curricula and with artistic processes. The kids get to look at their classwork from a different perspective,” she said.
Ms. Wyrrick has been doing work with students in geography, earth science, world history. Spanish and problem solving classes.
In Spanish class, she talked with the students about cultural differences and how they differ regarding . holidays, food and dances. They discussed their owTn family backgrounds, but many did not know about their ancestors. “That was a surprise to me,” Ms. Wyrrick said.
Another project in the Spanish class was to study the art of hand clapping and to learn new dance steps.
In the problem solving class the students were taught to choreograph a dance using computer skills. “We worked with a specific program," said Wyrrick. “We experimented on the stage at the high school with staging, formations, and using sample moves. By changing time and place on the stage they could create more elaborate designs," she said.
The students then constructed a dance on the computer. They could diagram placement on the stage and specific movements of the dancers. The final phase was to construct the dance with live bodies. “I think they enjoyed the whole process,” said Wyrrick. About ten students were involved with this project, and they worked on it for a part of every day for two weeks.
This project has sparked interest for a dance club at the high school. Twenty-five students have expressed interest in this extra curricular activity. The students would probably meet and practice in the commons area.
In Beth Gall’s science class, the students designed aliens. “Their form and different attributes need to correspond to one of the planets or a moon,” said Wyrrick. In constructing their aliens, the students considered how climate would affect skin, eyes, etc., and how the alien would
