If there are no cigarette or pipe smokers in you household, but you anticipate entertaining guests who smoke, have an adequate number of ashtrays available, or request that guests not smoke in your home. A stray ash can smolder for hours before igniting in a piece of furniture or carpeting.

Following the opening of gifts, bag all excess wrapping paper and ribbons, and remove to metal garbage can or dump site. In the event of a household fire, excess paper will increase the speed at which a fire will spread.

If you home or apartment does not have smoke detectors, now is the time to have them installed. If you do have smoke detectors, check the batteries.

A small fire extinguisher is an important household item as well. Purchase one that will extinguish all types of fires, including electrical and grease fires. Keep it in a handy place in your home. In the event of a fire, you don’t want to spend time searching for it. Review its proper usage with all member of your household. You may even want to practice outside on an imaginary’ fire. Make sure, however, that the extinguisher is fully recharged.

Discuss escape routes with all households members and overnight guests in the event of a fire. Consider alternate routes of a preferred exit, such as the front door, is blocked. Check with your local fire department for important information on escaping safely from a burning home. Is the fire department's number posted in plain site near each phone? If you have small children. help them memorize the number and instruct them on how to call the fire deparmtent in an emergency.
