Piedmont District supervisor Charles K. “Pete” Estes welcomed a small group of people to the Sperryville Fire Hall to consider what the county should do about “target practice” in residential areas.
The supervisors are considering an ordinance that would make it illegal to discharge a firearm in certain populated areas. There would be certain exceptions to the ordinance for self-protection and hunting.
“It's bad situation when a community has to be penalized because of the actions of a feur people,” he said. “There have been instances here, in Amissville and in Chester Gap. Anytime we pass an ordinance, we make it tighter on everybody. We need to be fair in our decisions for Rappahannock County.”
F. D. Coffey Jr. said, “We need an ordinance to protect people who live in the community. My wife was almost hit by small arms fire, and I almost got shot downtown."
