Carson Johnson said, “I have been a member of the NR A for many, many years. Years ago if a subject like this came up, I had the feeling I was against it. My thinking has changed a great deal. I now believe we have to have some rules...This isn’t taking guns away. It’s protecting people in a close in area from people harming them.
"We do have to have some kind of laws to protect people in towns,” he added. “If the sheriff is called out to protect people, he’s got to have something to go on. Otherwise he’s wasting his time.”
Katherine Wayland agreed that something needs to be done. “I’ve been shot at myself.”
“I just assumed it was against the law to discharge a firearm in town," Ruth Kiger said.
County Administrator John McCarthy said that except for Washington, none of the residential areas in Rappahannock are incorporated towns. "That is one thing the board will have to wrestle with; what is Sperryville?” He said they could use inserts in the tax maps. He said there is an inset map for Sperryville, “but most of you would define Sperryville as more than that.”
“It’s not target practice that’s the problem," Aileen Johnson said; “That’s just the excuse."
