General Nutrition
Jane Brody, who is the nutrition columnist of The New York Times has published three books: Jane Brody’s Nutrition Book, Jane Brody’s Good Food Book, and Jane Brody’s Good Food Gourment. She covers the basics of nutrition in a way that is easy to read and understand plus includes many tested and revised recipes. I heard Ms. Brody speak at the American House Economics Association conference several years ago, and she definitely “practices what she preaches.” She explained how she had made a lifestyle change to eat less fat, less sugar, more complex carbohydrates, exercise more, and how she is constantly experimenting and revising recipes to reflect these changes. Her books probably have the most varied and creative recipes, including lots of ethnic foods.
This list is by no means all inclusive, but a good foundation of basic nutrition books for people on special diets. Trade and brand names are used only for the purpose of information and Virginia Cooperative Extension does not guarantee nor warrant the standard of the product, nor does it imply approval of the product to the exclusion of others which may also be suitable.
Some of these books are available locally from the organizations named above, plus our local bookstore is very good about placing special orders if they don’t have what you want in stock.
