Sadly the struggle of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community to keep the weekly movies going has come to an end. It was a valient effort on the part of volunteers that lasted for more than 10 years.
Indeed the impetus for organizing RAAC was partly to revive the movies originally started by Freeman Allen at what was then called the Mountain Magic Theater.
For more than a decade volunteers ran the projector, sold tickets and ran the concession stand. Other volunteers worked tirelessly to arrange the schedule, dealing with delays in releasing films in the 16mm format that was all a non-profit operation could show.
Movie fans can take heart that a five-screen movie theater is apparently coming to Warrenton, but those movies will not be as convenient or as inexpensive as the RAAC movies.
However, not enough of us went to the movies often enough for the series to continue on a weekly basis, and now RAAC, which has brought such a wealth of artistic events to the county, looks for further fields to conquer.
