Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke said, “It’s not just target practice. It’s the gun fired because somebody is just out shooting. Some people shouldn’t have guns because of their mental condition or they are drunk. The ordinance needs to be broader, but the board has to tie it to a populated area.”
He said his office and Sheriff John Henry Woodward’s office get lots of complaints from Sperry ville, Chester Gap and Rappahannock Lakes.
Huey Atkins said, “If nobody sees them, how do you enforce it?”
C.B. Johnson said, “I’ve got neighbors who shoot through my house or close to it.” He wondered also how the ordinance would be enforced.
Mr. Luke said, “No matter what law is on the books, there’s always an excuse. That’s why we have judges and juries.”
