visors purchased 5.119 acres adjoining the school property on the south from Roy Leake for $60,000. The School Board is hoping to advertise for bids early in January 1994 and to award a bid in February with construction to start in early spring. They hope the addition will be ready to move into by Christmas vacation next year.

Toxic Chemicals

Various threats to the environment also made the news in 1993. In May the Rappahannock News reported that barrels containing possibly toxic substances had been left on property belonging to John Singleton near Rock Mills. The barrels were brought onto the property, apparently from Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, in 1990. Many of the barrels were deteriorating and the contents had leaked out. This past summer the barrels were removed. Tests of the soil where the barrels had been did not show serious problems.
