would vote on the issue in June, opponents appeared.
At the June meeting the supervisors voted to advertise an amendment to the zoning ordinance permanently banning the land application of sludge. The Planning Commission held a public hearing on the amendment in July and voted 4 to 2 to recommend approval, with members Sid Gottlieb and Werner Krebser opposing the ban.
The Board of Supervisors voted for the amendment banning sludge 3 to 2 In August with members Charles K. “Pete” Estes, Mike Massie, and Robert Anderson voting for the ban and Ellis Bingham and Hubert Gilkey voting against it.
When the supervisors took no action the next month to reconsider the ban, four landowners, Dr. Krebser, Dale Welch, John Harrison Powers and Patricia Saltonstall filed suit against the county claiming that the ban interferes with their right to farm. Their attorney later filed an amendment to the suit, and intends to file in federal court also. The original suit asked for $500,000 in damages. The amended suit drops that claim. The county has not yet responded to the suit, since the amended suit was filed just last week. Because of the original request for monetary damages, George Gilliam was assigned by the state to de^nd the county. He will continue to represent the county even though the claim for monetary damages was dropped.
Late Winter Storms
A pair of storms hit the county last March. First on Thursday March 4 the county received a heavy rain that caused floods in several areas. In the Shenandoah National Park this precipitation fell as two inches of ice, knocking clown trees and breaking branches all along the central section of the Skyline Drive.
