To the Editor:
I am a resident of Hay,market, Virginia, considered by Disney to be an immediate landowner. I have taken it upon myself to distribute unbiased information to the community about upcoming meetings conerning this issue. Having spoken with hundreds of residents, I have found the need to write about the concerns I have heard.
Unlike those opinions being reported by Disney representatives and others, the reactions of those most affected by the theme park’s approach have not been adequately addressed. As we await Disney’s application to Prince William County, people are still in a state of shock over the announcement. No one has expressed opposition to controlled development, but the scale and magnitude of Disney’s presence, coupled with the inevitable spin-off growth, has overwhelmed the community.
Disney, along with county and state officials, have tried to convince everyone the Disney’s America’s existence is inevitable. Many residents feel powerless and manipulated into believing that they have no recourse but to accept their fate. I have spoken with people who have been in tears and have not slept soundly since the announcement. Some welcome Disney, but when questioned, usually admit that they own a business or hope to “take their money and run.” Others, looking at the track record of their elected officials, do not feel reassured that they
