State legislators in Virginia have heard the facts regarding the California standards and have already decided not to move ahead of the issue. Virginia should be outraged that a commission whose members they do not elect is wresting control over states policy from the hands of legislators elected by the people. . As always, some advocates are attempting to turn, the debate over California cars into a litmus test for Virginia’s commitment to maintaining a clean environment. But makp no mistake, it is no such thing. Adopting the California standards on the East Coast will have little, if any, measurable impact on air quality. Instead, the impact will be felt by consumers, who are left to bear the higher cost of vehicles, or who are priced out of the new car market altogether, slowing fleet turnover^
The researchers who found that the California standards were inappropriate for our area also cautioned, “The United States <$m simply not afford to go down a pjjth that costs the public vast sumstof money and achieves little benefit Hn air quality.” The Ozone Transport Commission would do well to tajte this warning to heart. >
