For example, under the Social Security earnings rules for 1994, at age 65 a retired worker with maximum benefits of $1,147 per month may earn up to $49,011 during the year and still be eligible to receive a benefit for one month. If any family members also are eligible for beneifts, the earnings could be higher and some benefits might still be payable. If you’re under 65, you also can have substantial earnings and still qualify for some Social Security benefits.
In 1994, the earnings limit for individuals aged 62-64 will be $8,040. For every $2 you earn over $8,040, $1 is withheld from your benefits. For those aged 65-69, the amount is $11,160. For every $3 you earn over $11,160, $1 is withheld from your benefits. For beneficiaries aged 70 or older, earnings do not affect their benefit payments.
