Over the summer 20,000 pounds of agricultural chemicals were removed as a part of a cleanup sponsored by the Extension Service. These were mostly chemicals that were once legal to use in agriculture that had since been banned.
Finally in September the Rappahannock News carried a story that the Department of Environmental Quality was requiring action to handle an apparent oil leak across from the F.T. Valley Grocery on Route 231. This is probably only one of several similar local problems caused by old underground fuel tanks.
Sludge
Sludge was much in the news this year. This spring the Board of Supervisors held two public meetings to try to determine how the public would feel about lifting the moratorium on the land application of sludge. There was no significant objection to sludge voiced at these meetings, but when the supervisors announced they
