The federal government has awarded Virginia Tech a $7.5 million contract to develop and coordinate a world-wide research program on Integrated Pest Management techniques.
I PM is a technique where farmers scout their crops for pests and disease and only use chemical controls when absolutely necessary, instead of the older method of “spraying by the calendar.”
Tech has a five-year grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development to work with universities, research institutions and other organizations, in the U.S., Guatemala, Jamaica, Mali and the Philippines. Smaller programs will also be established in Uganda, Ecuador and Thailand. "*
