The Friday night program at the Rappahannock County Library at 8 p.m. on Jan. 7 will shine a bright light on a dark subject when Bruce Sloane give a talk and slide presentation on “Caves: Adventures Underground.)
Many people have visited nearby Luray Caverns or other commercial caves open to the public. But the majority of caves in the United States- n several thousand-do not have electric lights or paved pathways. A cave can be a few feet long, or, like Kentucky's Mammoth-Flint Ridge system, it can extend in a spaghettilike maze for several hundred miles.
You can walk through some caves, but in others you may have to crawl on your hands and knees (or even your stomach), use ropes to descend pits, or put on SCUBA equipment to explore underwater.
