Fourteen year-old David Loebs of Amissville hopes that he and his minpin, Nitre, will return with ribbons from the Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York City later this month.
David is a dog handler. Besides showing dogs, he also shows himself. He will be entered in the senior division of the show, for ages 14 through 18. He will be showing his three year-old miniature Doberman Pinscher, or “minpin.”/
The Westminster show is the most prestigious in the country, and David will be be there for the third year in a row.
Last year David won first place in the junior showmanship category for handlers of “toy” dogs, and finished fourth in the all-breed category. To have done so well is astounding, especially for someone who only began showing dogs three years ago.
To qualify for entrance into the Westminster Show, a handler must have won several first place ribbons in the year preceding the show. “The competition is fierce”, said Kay Bare of Castleton, who raises and shows Afghan hounds. Last year the junior showmanship class, of which David was a member, began with about 175 handlers. David made the cut to the final eight, and then ended up placing fourth.
“He has a natural talent. David has shown some of my afghans as a challenge, and he consistently won with the big dogs too,” said Ms. Bare.
