The 4-H member is responsible for care and feeding of the animal from now through the Farm Show. Their challenge will be to get their animals to market weight, usually 1,000 to 1,400 pounds depending on the breed and the animal by show time.
If the 4-H’ers over feeds they waste money and can end up with an animals that is too fat. Too little feed and the animal won’t make the grade. It is a challenge. Randall Updike, 4-H adult volunteer, will be supervising and working with Rappahannock 4-H’ers to be sure that they are on track.
The Rappahannock 4-H’ers receive training at monthly meetings of the 4-H Livestock Club. Those in the Swine and Sheep projects will weigh in later this spring. For information on 4-H programs, contact the staff at the Extension office at 6753619.
