School Administrator

Or Building Manager?

In December the School Board encouraged School Superintendent David Gangel to draft a budget for next year that will include making Richard Smith’s position as administrative assistant permanent.

In the current budget Mr. Smith was paid to work about 40 percent of his time as an administrative assistant. That became full time after school started.

The original justification for Mr. Smith’s administrative position was to relieve Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell of some of his duties so Mr. Chappell could work as clerk of the works during construction of the elementary school addition. It was presented as a temporary position.

Over the summer Mr. Smith was assigned the task of developing and monitoring policies relating to the environment and safety because of the incident last spring when the elementary school was evacuated and several children transported to area hospitals apparently because of fiimes from the project of repairing the roof.

Mr. Smith has been diligently proposing policies to meet all sorts of safety and environmental concerns.
