She noted that air pollution is causing acidification of streams in the park as well as reduced visibility.
She said that permits for new electrical generating plants approved during her tenure will give Virginia “the cleanest generating plants in the country. We must build the cleanest ones we can and work with other states to address existing problems,” she said.
She said that in this issue as in most, her job was a constant ballancing act. Some park officials wanted no more generating plants approved, “but we like to turn on the lights and know they will come on. We’ve experienced an example of that this weekend,” she added.
“Many controversial issues came through the secretariate,” she said. “It was a matter of ballancing the issues of preserving the environment with a concern about jobs and the economy. I tried to do a fair job.”
