She is particularly pleased that $95 million in bonds to support state parks were approved. About half of the funds will be used to upgrade current state parks, but the bonds have also enabled the state to form five new parks, including one to be located in Warren County along the Shenandoah River.
“It's a beautiful stretch of river, with water access for fishing and canoing,” she said. She added that research shows that people particularly want access to water and four of the five new parks will be on rivers or the Chesapeake Bay. “It really was exciting to be part of that process,” she said.
Mrs. Haskell had years of experience in the field of the environment including 16 years on the state Air Pollution Control Board before taking on her assignment in the Wilder Administration.
Air quality remains a passion for her. She noted that Virginia has joined with seven other states in the Southern Appalachian Mountain Institute to try to solve problems of pollution in the Appalachian range. Ninety to 94 percent of the air pollution in the Shenandoah National Park comes from outside Virginia, she said, and a lot comes from West Virginia, particularly Virginia Power’s coal-fired generating plant at Mt. Storm.
“I’m hopeful we will make some progress in a collaborative way, trying to make clear that polution that affects Shenandoah also affects West Virginia,” she said. “They also have a big tourist industry. ”
She said that as a result of passage of the Federal Clean Air Act, the Virginia Rower facility is installing scrubbers on one of its units. She said she was hopeful it will later nut scrubbers on the other units.
