The road signs and new addresses for the E-911 system are hold until the Board of Supervisors can reconsider the road names.
At Monday’s meeting the supervisors voted to schedule a hearing for 7 p.m. Monday, October 3 to again deal with road names.
About 16 people were on hand Monday to ask that Route 637 from just outside Flint Hill to Route 647 be named Poe’s Road rather than Jerico Road. At last months meeting several people were present to ask that a section of Route 640 be named Forest Grove Road rather than Doc’s Road.
At the beginning of the process the board asked the fire and rescue squads to suggest names for the roads. They suggested Jerico Road for 637 and Forest Grove Road for that section of Route 640.
At the first public hearing Rob1 ert Dennis, who lives on Route 637 said that in the 1700’s a Poe received a land grant for property in the region that required that he build a road to carry tobacco to market. The road has been called Poe’s Road ever since, he said. The board decided to call the section from U.S. 211 near Amissville to Route 647 South Poe’s Road and the section from Route 647 to U.S. 522 near Flint Hill North Poe’s Road.
At the next public hearing landowners who live nearest Flint Hill asked that it be changed back to Jerico Road, and the supervisors went along with that suggestion, which seemed to have more support.
Since then many people have come before the supervisors to ask that Poe’s Road be used instead.
