Yom Kippur
Classes Offered
Hsvura Ktana announced today that Rabbi Carla Theodore will lead a learners service on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. The service is open to those interested in meeting the preceding three Thursday evenings to learn some of the structure, meaning and music of this Holiday.
The preparation classes will be Aug. 25, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. The service itself will be at sundown Wednesday evening Sept. 14.
Yom Kippur climaxes the interval in the Jewish tradition known as the Days of Awe. These begin on Rosh Hashana which is both the beginning of the New Year and the Day of Judgement. This interval is a time of self scrutiny and of sober acknowledgement of our imperfections. On Yom Kippur, through a day of fasting, song and prayer and celebration of the sovereignty of God a commitment is made to start again.
Anyone who wants to take this opportunity to gain some familiarity with this holiest of holy days is welcome. If you want to take part, send a post card with your name and phone number right away to Rabbi Carla Theodore, Box 41, Woodville, VA 22749.
