Best Wishes to the Leakes

i •

It’s hard to see Gary and Renee Leake leave Rappahannock County High School.

They have done so much for the past eight years in one case and seven in the other. Their teams haven’t always won, but their players have always been enthusiastic about their coaches. They have tried to instill sportsmanship in their players, sometimes going against teams that did not appear to have the same goals.

The summer sports camps have brought many children an appreciation for the games that will one day make them 1 better players or simply more appreciative, knowledgeable fans. ,

When the school system introduced the family life curriculum, we felt these were two teachers the students - > could feel comfortable with in discussing the more delicate subjects in the curriculum. • -

However, their departure provides the opportunity to take stock of where the physical education and athletic programs are. Their comments provide much food for thought.

We agree that it is not reasonable to expect people to coach as many different sports as they have. We agree that drivers’ education needs someone who does not have a great many other responsibilities, and we agree that the athletic director’s position needs someone who will be around for a while, something that does not seem to be the case when it is combined with the position of assistant principal.

Perhaps someone should be hired to do drivers’ education and be the athletic director who is not expected to also be assistant principal or teach physical education and coach sports teams. Fees for behind the wheel instruction could be raised to cover part of the cost of thi$.

We agree that either the school should start a football program or soccer should be a fall sport. It is not reasonable to offer only cross country for boys in the fall and then try to find enough players for baseball, track and soccer in spring.

However, most of the public schools in Virginia that have interscholastic soccer play in the spring. Football has a powerful hold in most areas of the state, and schools don’t want to jeopardize their football programs by having a rival fall sport. A large number of private, schools do play fall soccer, however, and it might be possible to join a private school league just for soccer.
