Last Sunday, the Rappahannock Monarchs split a double header with New Market. The Monarchs won the three-game series and have now advanced to the Apple Valley League finals against regular season champion Edinburg.
The first game on Sunday had begun the prior weekend, but was postponed by rain. The game resumed in the fifth inning with the Monarchs trailing 5-3. Rappahannock closed the gap to one in the sixth inning when Neils Aylor singled and scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings Rappahannock’s defense came unglued and New Market scored eight runs, only two of which were earned.
In the top of the ninth, Monarch first baseman Stoney Fry launched a two run homer to make the final score 14 to 6. Hard luck starter Leroy North took the loss for the Monarchs.
In the second game of the day, staff ace Luther Alexander went the distance and the Monarchs cruised
