Megan Goshom and Kendra Strange were the big winners among adults at the First Annual Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department Gymkhana Saturday.

Liam Wallace, Colin Achilles, Robbie Hammil and Justin Berger were all winners in the lead line division.

Organizer Sherry Hammil-Huff said the event may be held more frequently than annually since there is already talk of holding another in late September. However, she said she was “disappointed that people didn’t show up who said they would.”

The equestrian games event held at Carol Quaintance’s farm outside 1 Flint Hill was a first for the fire department. Chief Frank Huff served as announcer. Ms. Hamill-Huff said everyone there seemed to have fun, and her assistants did a wonderful job of helping.

She said it may have been an advantage that attendance was sparse since that gave her a chance to see what works and what doesn’t in putting on such an event without having large crowds waiting for classes to start.

She and the fire department will be taking on the Grove Schooling Shows Wednesday evenings in Warrenton for the month of August, and after that and the carnival she and i the fire department will. decide whether or not to stage a second gymkhana this year.

The day started with a “command class” for children on ponies being controlled by lead lines. Liam Wallace was first in the first heat with Robbie Hammil second. In the second heat Colin Achilles was first and Liam second.

The command class for adults followed with Any Krenytzky first, Donna Gilkey second and Julia Bennet third.

In the lead-line race first division Colin was first and Justin second. Then in “Around the World” where riders raced to turn 360 degrees around in the saddle Justin was first and Colin second. In the second division Robbie was first and Liam second and that result was repeated in Around the World.
