Last spring Shannon Shrader was apparently a normal kindergartener. She enjoyed school and her friends. She had a fairly new baby sister.
But her mother Peggy Kelly was worried because she kept bumping into things. She wondered if Shannon needed glasses.
Last summer she took Shannon to have her eyes checked, and that led to more and more tests. Shannon’s symptoms grew much more serious. Suddenly she was paralyzed on one side and had twitches on the other. A two-and-a-half-week hospital stay ended with a biopsy that revealed a large malignant brain tumor. It was not operable, and the doctors gave Shannon about six months to live.
The only hope was extensive radiation treatment. The family of four tried for a week at the beach. But that trip was cut short when spinal fluids began building up on Shannon’s brain. An emergency helicopter ride was followed by surgery to put in a shunt to drain off the fluid, and the family began the series of radiation treatments.
Five days a week Mrs. Kelly took Shannon to Fairfax Hospital for radiation. At about the half-way point, there was a one-week time off from the treatments.
