State law (Sections 24.2-626, 627) requires voting machines for all precincts with more than 750 registered voters. Today only Washington precinct is required by law to have and use two machines to tally votes. I expect the Amissville and Scrabble precincts will reach the magic number within the next year or two.
The immediate problem is next year’s elections. All of the constitutional officers (except the County Clerk) will be up for re-election. Joining them will be the supervisors, members of the General Assembly and, for the first time, those running for seats on the School Board. Other constitutional and/or bond referenda may be added by the General Assembly next year.
It is too many pieces of paper. It means too many hours. We need to give these loyal, hard working, dedicated election judges a break. The supervisors need to plan now to purchase enough voting machines so that our largest precincts can have the machines in place by next November.
