The test, he adds, would be whether the gift was meant for the recipient to take home and use in his or her personal life or to use in business life, the latter being the more acceptable standard.

When your company deals in the global arena, however, gift-giving takes on other significance.

“In many cultures, gift-giving is an essential part of doing business and it would be considered within that culture unethical not to give and receive gifts — sometimes substantial gifts,” says Hanson.

“In many Asian and Muslim cultures, gift-giving is part of building a relationship, so American companies have to find a way of dealing with that when they’re a global company operating in those environments,” he adds.

“The gift-giving practice of individual countries is one of those cultural characteristics that every company must learn when they go to do business abroad,” he says.

As for gifts to a company’s own employees during the holidays, many firms give bonuses or bottles of wine or other consumable foods, as well as such items as pens, clocks or the proverbial watch. HP offers a catalog to its employees who select gifts after five or 10 years of service, for example.

“The point here is to recognize the efforts and honor those employees in a way that’s consistent throughout the company,” says Simmermacher.
