children had been slain “at one fell swoop.” In “Hamlet,” the melancholy Dane dismisses Ophelia: “Get thee to a nunnery.” Hamlet finds irony in the enginer who is “hoist with his own petar,” this is, blown up by his own explosive device. (Incidentally, it’s an enginer, not an engineer, and Shakespeare spelled it “petar,” not “petard.”)
