The Smithsonian Chamber Players bring Music for the Holiday to The Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. The performance is part of the popular Smithsonian at Little Washington concert series, now in its third season at the Theatre.
Early carols and noels from the Baroquie period give a fresh and unusual musical interpretation to familiar Christmas texts. The settings by Charpentier of simple French carols, the “folk” music of the day, contrast with the serenely beautiful “Natus est Jesus” of Boddecker and the florid artistry of Monteverdi.
James Weaver, will bring a small pipe organ to the Theatre for this concert. He founded and directed the chamber music residency program at the Smithsonian to work with the splendid historic instruments in the museum collections. Weaver plays the harpsichord, fortepiano and organ, presenting solo concerts and working extensively in chamber music repertoire in America and Europe. He will give a preconcert talk about he evening’s performance beginning at 7:30.
