consider these numbers offered by the American Animal Hospital Association:
• There are more than 52 million pet dogs in the United States.
• There are more than 57 million pet cats residing in American households.
• More than 400,000 goats and sheep are kept as family pets.
• In 1992, pet owners spent approximately $11 billion on pet food and supplies.
Those figures don’t even include the vast numbers of fish, birds, hamsters, gerbils and potbellied pigs. And many households count two or more pets as members.
Perusing the aisles of your local pet store is sure to yield a bewildering array of gift ideas for your favorite pooch or kitty — or for a pet-loving recipient on your shopping list.
Also look for stores that specialize in a particular animal to find unusual, pet-theme gifts. This is really easy for cat owners because there seems to be a disproportionate number of stores with feline themes.
