PERFECT PACKING
If you intend to send packages on your own, here’s a roundup of suggestions to make the shipping successful:
• Use corrugated cartons or boxes in good, rigid condition. Select a carton large enough to allow room for sufficient cushioning material on all sides of the contents. You can purchase such cardboard boxes and other packing supplies from a moving agency, shipping center or box store.
• Cushion inside the box with plasticfoam peanuts, plastic bubble wrap, crumpled newspaper or heavy brown paper. Cushioning should be stuffed several inches on all sides of the item so it cannot move easily when shaken.
• For fragile items, double box, use extra cushioning, label the box as fragile and buy insurance to guarantee intact delivery.
• Close the carton securely with strong plastic tape at least two inches wide: Masking or cellophane tape is not sufficient. Don’t use string or paper on packages since they can get caught in conveyor belts.
• Label properly. Include complete return and mailing addresses; never place a mailing label over a seam or closure or on top of sealing tape; place clear tape over the label so ink will not smear; put an extra, address label inside the box in case the outside is damaged.
