Virginia’s many Christmas tree farms to begin “the search.”
“The search,” of course, is the quest for the perfect tree. Some families prefer white pine, others Scotch pine; still others insist that nothing but a Norway spruce will grace the family room.
Each member of the family starts to wander through the sea of green beauties. They try to imagine how this one or that one will look decked out with lights and tinsel. After an hour or so, everyone starts to get cold and a decision is made. Mom or dad or an older sibling cuts down the chosen tree. It’s paid for and tied to the top of the car.
The Christmas season has officially begun.
Local tree farm owners are setting up shop now, preparing for the flurry of activity. Most provide saws and twine or tree wrapping for their customers. The trees they offer for sale vary in size and variety. Prices start at about $25.Some tree farms offer extras to help the Christmas spirit along. Some, like Moose Hill Farm in Sperryville, offer complimentary cookies and hot cider.
Ticonderoga Farms in Chantilly features hayrides, pony rides, marshmallow roasting, bonfires, Indian forts, hay tunnels and refreshments, ft is rumored that Santa Claus will even make an appearance. Now there’s a man who knows his Christmas trees.
