With 64 percent of the vote, Gary Settle swept the sheriff’s race on Tuesday.
He had 1,876 votes versus incumbent Sheriff John Henry Woodward’s 1,044 votes which totalled 36 percent. “I am kind of shocked that we won it with such a comfortable margin,” said Mr. Settle.
Mr. Settle carried every precinct in the county, winning the biggest margin from the voters in Sperryville. The key to his campaign, he felt, was getting out and seeing people door to door and listening to their concerns. He said that people felt they did not have a voice in the community regarding law enforcement. “1 think people were ready for a change,” he said.
Though the campaign and been a tremendous amount of work, Mr. Settle feels it was worth it. “John Henry Woodward is a fine man and I hope we can continue our relationship. I have the utmost respect for him and his team in the Sheriff’s Office,” he said. Mr. Settle hopes the transition will be smooth one and looks forward to serving the countyjns sheriff.
Sheriff Woodward was unavailable for comment following the election.
Ron Frazier of Amissville will be the new man on the Board of Supervisors, beating out Ellis Bingham with 306 votes to 2}2. Mr. Frazier said, “I felt confident about winning and am grateful the way the election turned out.” He thanks the people who turned out to vote for him and said he hopes to be the supervisor that his district needs.
Mr. Bingham graciously accepted defeat, saying “1 thought he put up a hard fight and he won....l wish him all the luck in the world. I’ve enjoyed serving the county for the last eight years....I’m a little relieved because I think the county is going to face the largest tax increase in years, and I wish him luck in trying to deal with that.”
The supervisor’s race in Wakefield District was close, with Hubert S. Gilkey, III winning over Roger A. Welch, 339 to 299. Mr. Gilkey carried the most votes from Chester Gap, 138 to 56, while Mr. Welch carried Flint Hill, 243 to 201. When contacted after the election, Mr. Gilkey said, “I’m very grateful. It was a close race, and 1 was glad of the outcome.”
Mr. Welch was unavailable for comment. - Those running unopposed in the Board of Supervisors’ election were Robert Anderson, who received 495 votes in the Stonewall-Hawthorn District; Charles K. Estes of Piedmont District, who had 508 votes; and Mike Massie with 494 votes in the Hampton District.
Treasurer Frances Foster garnered the most votes of the unopposed constitutional officers, with 2,521. Commissioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins had 2,510 votes, while Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke’s total was 2,384.
