Election Results
It was a long night as predicted, but the 31 st House of Delegates race was over early as incumbent Republican Jay Katzen ran up large leads in Fauquier and Warren counties to easily overcome challenger Sue Scheer's narrow lead in Rappahannock.
However, Virginia voters also spent Tuesday denying Gov. George Allen the Republican majorities in the General Assembly he said he needed to overcome Democratic obstructionism.
Perhaps Gov. Allen should realize that Virginia voters do not want the drastic changes at the state level that American voters asked for at the federal level last year when Republicans gained majorities in both houses of Congress. The state w ould benefit from a mood in Richmond closer to that which prevailed during the governor’s first year in office rather than the confrontations of last year’s session.
Gary Settle won an overwhelming victory in his campaign to become the county’s Sheriff. He carried every precinct in the county. Voters must realize that once he becomes the Sheriff, as opposed to devoting himself full-time to running for Sheriff, he will not be able to come knocking on their doors. However, he has said he will have an open door policy in his office, so voters should know where to find him.
Rappahannock County followed trends set earlier in School Board races by returning all incumbents who were running to office. Mr. Wingfield and Mr. Makela will take office when the School Board begins work on what may well be its toughest budget yet. They will clearly have their work cut out for them.
Mr. Frazier will be a true addition to the Board of Supervisors once he realizes that the other members have not enjoyed raising taxes. It is increased mandates from the federal and state governments combined with decreased revenues from those sources that have forced the hated increases in real estate and personal property taxes.
Clean Up Time
Before the bulk of the county’s apples are even harvested a new crop of campaign signs appears. It’s time to harvest them.
The Rappahannock News was thrilled to learn Tuesday night that Ron Frazier was already out gathering up signs. Other candidates and campaign workers should join him in ridding the county of this blight on its scenic vistas.
