The first facial features to take shape were the eye sockets, two dark smudges on the flesh-toned background. Then the nose, the length of which was carefully measured by the artist with a stick held vertically at arms’ length toward the subject’s face.
The mouth and chin followed, each measured as before, and the shadow outlining the right side of the sitter’s face. The Judge’s white hair and beard were roughed in, as well as the ear visible to the artist. By this time, one hour into the demonstration, a barely recognizable face had emerged on the canvas.
Having completed the general outline of the subject, Mr. Bittinger moved, with a fistful of brushes large and small, to work up the details, explaining exactly what he was attempting with each stroke of his brush.
